World champions?

As I watched the SuperBowl on Sunday night (thanks to Yoho and Dean hosting two fun parties!), I found it funny that the winner was declared the "World Champion." I mean, the last time I checked, I thought only other U.S. teams where in the National Football League. I mean doesn't even the name NFL suggest that only one nation's football league is playing for the title? Kind of funny....
